Slinky Seismometers

Seismology is a very interesting hobby for the hobby home user it's difficult to find an affordable seismic instrument

My first seismic instrument was designed by rockwave model number HS-3 . This instrument was amazing and the engineering was outstanding ,the price was affordable for the hobbyist home user. Unfortunately we had a flood in the garage and the internal electronics got damaged by water, after contacting rockwave they told me that there were no more instruments of this model and no spare circuit boards, but they did have a new model which was a vertical type instrument where as the HS-3 was a horizontal instrument, so I went with the  VS1 as a replacement this instrument was more compact ,engineering and design is amazing I described it as a piece of engineering art with amazing sensitivity a much bigger improvement on the horizontal HS-3  , and the instrument was affordable for the hobbyist.

Unfortunately at this time rockwave is not supplying or building any instruments, maybe they are developing something in the background.

I have not got a raspberry shake instrument so I cannot tell you any more other than go to their website and read information on their forums and ask other people on the forums about the different products or get in touch directly with the company hopefully you will find a seismic instrument that you can use and be part of a seismic network.

There is another way you can get involved is to experiment with some of the educational instruments the one that springs to mind is the slinky seismic instrument ,I call this an instrument because anything that can measure and record is an instrument doesn't matter how primitive it is. The slinky instrument is capable of picking up local events , there is even a educational instrument made from Lego it works well,  records and picks up local events. The best part about these kits is that you can modify and experiment with them and  get a really good understanding how seismic instruments work.

If you want to start to do earthquake detection seriously as a hobby then you may need to go to the next stage by getting a more advanced seismic instrument this is where the raspberry shake seismic instruments come into its own. One of the most important thing is that the raspberry shake as a community network, the instrument is called a turnkey you simply plug it in no messing around just install the software and start monitoring. From the information I read on the website the instrument is very compact I also like the way that you can see through the case to see the electronics and also the small compact sensor Geophone.

Hoping one day I'll get my hands on a raspberry shake so I can have a play, and experience the easy setup as described on their website.

I do not have any connection with any of the companies that I suggest on my website, I do not sell or take any commission from any company. I like to supply the information to people who are interested in my hobbies.
Horizontal rockwave HS-3  this  got damaged replaced it with a rockwave VS1
Raspberry Shake
I get asked now and again where can I get a affordable seismometer   Rockwave  are not supplying instruments any more

Over the last few years there had been kickstart companies who have come up with a hobbyist seismic instrument. On their website it looks easy to setup and its affordable. The  device name is called Raspberry Shake they have several different Flavours  ranging from raspberry shake (1D) – (3D) – (4D) – (Boom) – (Jam)  please see image below  for the difference in sensors channels and sample rates.
