In this modification I brought an old wirling hydrometer which consists of two accurate thermometers. The first thing is to dismantle the wirling hydrometer and very carefully remove the two thermometers, these will be individually mounted into a glass tube to make 2 robust outdoor sheath pattern thermometer it's important to match your materials to the thermometers as they can vary depending on age and make. The glass tubes I am using in this modification are 5 mm inside diameter make sure your length of tube is longer than the thermometers I purchased these from eBay.
You need a glass tube slightly bigger diameter than the thermometers and some very small O-rings which are needed as spacers.
Slide a small O-ring on the top and bottom of the thermometer, next insert the thermometer into a glass tube. The rubber O-rings need to fit perfectly you need to match to the inside diameter of the glass sheath tube then seal both ends of the glass tube, if you use the mouldable glue when it sets hard you can use a small syringe with a fine needle to suck out all the air to make a vacuum inside, this will increase the thermometers response time.
Recommended material for sealing the glass ends
I used a product called sugru which is a type of Mouldable Glue.
Sugru is the world's first mouldable glue that turns into rubber. Its 6-in-1 formula allows the ability to: fix, bond, cushion, replace, create and seal. Sugru is so easy to use: stick it, shape it, it turns into rubber. It's strong and durable: adheres strongly and securely across many surfaces and environments. Sugru is also waterproof.
I use the same technique to mount a one wire temperature chip which enables you to put on a cotton Wick which will turn it into a wet bulb and use another one for a dry bulb. Using this technique it protects the one wire temperature chip from being destroyed and short-circuited from moisture.
